Working yesterday with a colleague. She was telling me about a friend who’d had an operation, that required plastic surgery. The surgeon had finished off the job leaving lots of red dots and a red ring on the tip. I looked at my friend, really puzzled. “You’re talking about a vasectomy?” I said. “No, a [...]
Worth a try, this…I’m going to put on this part of the site little pieces of information that I’ve picked up during the day/week whatever. Not something I’ve looked up, but something that’s caught my eye, or someone’s said to me. For example, today’s nugget: the reason for the word ’sabotage’:
“the Dutch word for a [...]
Writing this on Bank Holiday Monday. For once the weather has been tremendous, so it’s a weekend of being in the garden. Tidying, then sitting, then the barbie…first time this year. As I write this, Nathan has just completed a 50-mile bike ride to Uttoxeter, and David is with a group of friends camping in [...]
R: Just finished reading the Dam Busters - an oral history built from the stories of those who were there. Intest in this was stimulated by my recent visit to the Derwent Dam, which was used as a practice ground ahead of the real thing
W: On TV - as well as ‘24′ and ‘The Apprentice’, [...]
Some of you may have already seen this, as it is doing the rounds via email. But if not, it’s well worth a read…
Dear Mr Darling,
Please find below my suggestion for fixing Britain’s economy. Instead of giving billions of pounds to banks that will squander the money on lavish parties and unearned bonuses, use the [...]

What might be in my list?
How to choose…should it be:
personal memories and associations?
the best representative of that kind of music?
great for the dance floor?
or simply….THE BEST!
If I show you mine, will you show me yours??
So here goes…not [...]
This is a new idea for me. I’m going to use this heading to put down what I’m currently reading, watching (films, shows and gigs), and listening to (cds, radio). A sort of audio-visual diary. So here goes:
9 May 09:
Reading: ‘What I talk about when I talk about running’ (Haruki Murakami); ‘Small Island’ (Andrea Levy)
Watching: [...]
I recently decided to download all my photos on my mobile phone, and thought some might be good to have on this blog, to give some idea of people and places in my life….
So, here’s Caroline, when we were in Brighton last December for our wedding anniversary:
And this is one of the pier at sunset…
Earlier [...]
Another great day out yesterday. We were in Knutsford, to see the May Day parade. Great weather, great food (we had a great vantage point for much of it from the front window of a local Thai restaurant), great costumes, magnificent shire horses, and of course, lots of colourful costumes. Then, later [...]
Last weekend we went on a guided walk in the Derwent Valley, in Derbyshire, to the Derwent Reservoir, whose dam was used for practice by the Dambusters, ahead of their attacks on the Ruhr dams. It also incuded a wonderful visit to the ‘lost’ village of Birchinlee, or ‘Tin Town’ as it was commonly [...]
