Dear Mr Darling,

Please find below my suggestion for fixing Britain’s economy.  Instead of giving billions of pounds to banks that will squander the money on lavish parties and unearned bonuses, use the following plan.  You can call it the Patriotic Retirement Plan.

There are about 5 million people over 50 in the workforce.  Pay them £1 million apiece severance money for early retirement - with the following conditions:

• they MUST retire.  Five million job openings - unemployment fixed
• they MUST buy a new BRITISH made car - ie one made in the UK - auto industry fixed
• they MUST either buy a new house, or pay off their mortgage - housing crisis fixed
• they MUST buy £100 of alcohol/tobacco a week - further support through taxes to an ailing economy

It can’t get any easier than that!

• they MUST give to any of their unemployed children or grandchildren £100,000 on condition they use it to start a business - unemployment, incentive, new businesses all addressed.
